The History Is Extraordinary

Charles E. Rushmore — yes, the same Charles Rushmore for whom Mount Rushmore is named — commissioned this estate in 1908 as a retreat for his wife Jeanette, a peaceful sanctuary away from New York City. It was originally called Carmore Estate, a combination of her maiden name Carpenter and the family name Rushmore. Over the decades it passed through history before being reimagined most recently as a celebrated Hudson Valley B&B and wedding venue — its 1911 Spanish Colonial ballroom hosting countless unforgettable celebrations under its vaulted ceilings and ornate plaster carvings.

This is the kind of history you simply cannot buy. And now, in a way, you actually can.

The Main House

The main residence has 10 bedrooms, 6 full baths, 3 half baths, and 10 fireplaces. The kitchen is a full professional operation — Miele steam unit, Viking warming drawer, Viking microwave, three Viking ovens including a 6-burner and grill, two dishwashers, and a walk-in refrigerator — custom designed and renovated in 2005. Radiant heat throughout, four zones of central air, a whole-house generator with auto transfer switch, and a full smart home system. This is a house designed for serious hosting at serious scale, much like the Oaks Estate in Thonotosassa we featured earlier this year — though Rushmore Estate carries a history that is entirely its own.

The Ballroom, The Cottages, The Grounds

Beyond the main house, the estate includes a separate ballroom building with 4 bedrooms, 4 full baths, and 2 half baths — its grand 1911 Spanish Colonial interior featuring vaulted ceilings, ornate plaster carvings, oak floors, French doors opening to a stone patio, and an elaborate fireplace. There is also a separate cottage with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths, a detached garage with a 2-bedroom apartment above it, and a greenhouse.

The grounds are something else entirely. Fifty acres of gated, forested Hudson Valley landscape with a private lakefront beach, kayaking and canoeing, extensive hiking trails with waterfalls, berry-picking orchards, apple orchards, a 60-foot infinity pool, a gazebo for candlelit dinners, a tennis and basketball court, and rolling lawns that stretch toward the Catskills. It is zoned R1A, R3A, and agriculture — which means the possibilities here are genuinely vast.

A Once-in-a-Generation Listing

We have been to a lot of extraordinary homes. Rushmore Estate is something different. The combination of its history — commissioned by the man for whom Mount Rushmore is named, built in 1908, restored and celebrated as one of the Hudson Valley’s finest estates — with the sheer scale of what is on these 39 acres makes it one of the most significant listings we have ever seen in New York. Whether it becomes a private family compound, a continued hospitality destination, or something entirely new, it deserves an owner who appreciates every inch of what has been preserved here.
